13 Compressed Files

In your Litigation Response Plan, you need to talk about compressed files. Most people refer to these as ZIP files and ZIP is just one file extension of about 100 where files are compressed into a specific file that's much smaller. ZIP files or compressed files can include other compressed files, so when vendors deal with compressed files, there's a recursive process where they come across a compressed file, explode it, process all the files and folders, and then find another compressed file, and unzip that one. This can happen over and over. Make sure that you company if it does Electronic Discovery in house has uncompressed file and folder tools available to deal with this, and if you use outside Electronic Discovery vendors, make sure that they have the capability to deal with compressed files.
